Garmin has surprised users by releasing a new beta update for its popular Instinct 2 series smartwatches. This comes after the company had previously declared the end of its beta testing phase for the 16.xx software build. The unexpected update aims to rectify several bugs that slipped through the cracks in both previous beta and stable releases.
Expanding the Beta Cycle
The latest update, designated as Beta Version 16.11, is now rolling out over-the-air to eligible Instinct 2, Instinct 2S, Instinct 2X, and Crossover models. This move suggests that Garmin may be planning another stable release in the 16.xx series to incorporate these bug fixes.
How to Get the Update
Users can obtain the Beta Version 16.11 update in two ways:
- Over-the-Air: Access the update menu on the smartwatch itself by navigating to Menu > System > Software Update and selecting “Check for Updates.”
- Garmin Express: Connect the Instinct 2 or Crossover to a computer using Garmin Express software. The update should be available through the application.
Bug Fixes Included in Beta Version 16.11
While the update brings improvements to the entire Instinct 2 series, specific changes vary depending on the model.
General Fixes:
- Corrected an issue where the CT10 name displayed incorrectly.
- Resolved a graphical problem on the battery saver watch face.
Instinct 2S Specific:
- Addressed a problem where incident detection could be unintentionally triggered during mountain bike activities.
Instinct 2S Specific:
- Fixed an issue with the Acute Load icon in the Training Status widget.
Instinct 2X and Crossover Specific:
- Enabled the addition of data screens to Basketball and Volleyball activities.
Garmin has not provided a timeline for the release of the next stable update. However, given the company’s decision to push out another beta version, it is reasonable to expect a new stable release in the near future.
