Garmin has rolled out the first alpha/early beta firmware update of its latest quarterly cycle. This update, version 18.09, is currently available for select Garmin watch models including the Fenix 7 series, Epix series, Enduro 2, Quatix 7, and MARQ Gen 2.
Accessing the Beta Update
To access this early beta release, you must be part of Garmin’s Beta testing group. Unlike standard updates, this one requires manual installation through your watch’s settings.
Key Additions in Firmware 18.09
Garmin Share App
A major highlight of this update is the introduction of the Garmin Share app for watches. Previously available only on Garmin’s bike computers, this app now lets you share waypoints, workouts, and courses directly between compatible Garmin devices.
Enhanced Map Customization
The update brings new map customization features, including a “Dark Mode” for maps and a “Popularity” toggle in map settings. These additions offer users more control over their navigation experience.
Improved Race Time Predictions
Garmin has also refined its race time predictions, with early feedback indicating these predictions are now more optimistic. Historically, these predictions have been hit or miss, so this enhancement is worth noting.
Fixes and Enhancements
Power Profile Fixes
Although not officially mentioned in the changelog, users report that issues with power profiles have been resolved. Editing profiles from Garmin Connect now works seamlessly, addressing a persistent bug since version 17.10.
Ongoing Investigations
